Summary
In this course you study language and society in Africa from a sociolinguistic perspective, both from a historical and present-day point of view and with an emphasis on multilingualism and the issues that follow from this.
About
The aim of the course is to provide a basis for understanding the interrelationship between society and languages in Africa. You will learn to identify language-related problems, analyse them and propose solutions. Topics you will discuss during the course are the role of languages in socio-economic development, as well as language policies, such as the relationship of ex-colonial languages to African languages and their consequences for the population. Based on this knowledge, you will be able to relate the problems in Africa in a global context.
