English: Introductory Course. Literary and Cultural Studies
Summary
The aim of the course is to give you an understanding of key concepts and methods in cultural studies as well as how these can be applied on cultural and popular-cultural texts. The course focuses on some central fields such as history, ideology, representation and environment. These fields will also be highlighted from a sustainable perspective which is based ideas of social, economic and ecological justice and diversity.
About
In this course, you are introduced to English-language literature and culture with a particular focus on literary and cultural studies methods. You learn to use basic terminology within the fields of literary and cultural studies and to apply these concepts in analyses of both classic literary texts and popular cultural phenomena.
The course is divided into two parts: one focusing on English-language literature (7.5 credits) and one on cultural studies in English (7.5 credits), including themes such as history, ideology, representation, and environment — viewed from a sustainability perspective.
Through distance-based teaching in the form of lectures, seminars, and group assignments, you work actively with text analysis, written tasks, and oral presentations.
By practicing argumentation, close reading, and academic writing, as well as reflecting on theory and method, the course helps you develop a scholarly approach and an awareness of the role of culture in sustainable societal development.
The course has scheduled online classes.
Prerequisites and selection
Entry requirements
Applicants must prove their knowledge of English: English 6 from Swedish Upper Secondary School or the equivalent level of an internationally recognized test, for example TOEFL, IELTS.
Local admissions
General entrance requirements for university studies and the Swedish upper secondary course English 6 or equivalent. English proficiency equivalent to IELTS 6.5 no part under 5.5 or TOEFL 575 p, TWE score 4.5 is also required
Assessment of qualifications
If you lack the formal qualifications in English, but believe that you have the equivalent knowledge of English, you may take a test to determine whether you are eligible. Read more:

It is not possible to take the test if you make a late application for the course.
Selection
Selection is based upon average grade from upper secondary school (34 %), the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 165 credits (33 %) and Högskoleprovet - Swedish Scholastic Aptitude Test (33 %).
