Content

The aim of this course is to strengthen the students' own resources and skills for a

to develop innovative material-based craft and design products and services. Through
structured mappings of gaps in the market the student investigates how these products
and services can be offered in both traditional and nontraditional contexts. By encouraging students to think beyond traditional economic models within their own field the course supports new forms of collaboration and production. The student develops an action plan that is based on their own identified and developed resources
and will be set in motion already during later part of the course.

Objectives

On successful completion of the course the student will be able to

Knowledge and Understanding

  • give account for the conditions of their own practice within a professional context from a historical, cultural, and societal perspective
  • give account for processes that develop material-based innovation and where they can be applied
  • identify gaps in the market where there are entrepreneurial opportunities for innovative products or services
  • give account for strategies to make their craft or design business economically sustainable

Competence and Skills

  • plan and structure their own work based on given conditions for collaborations and client assignments within their professional context
  • identify needs for increased knowledge and skills for the entrepreneurial opportunities of their own practice within craft or design
  • develop an action plan that creates a foundation for a sustainable professional practice
  • initiate relationships and networking activities that favor the implementation of their action plan in offering of products or services to the market

Judgement and Approach

  • critically reflect on opportunities and challenges for a sustainable professional practice within craft or design
  • problematise the interaction between artistic expression and content in relation to
the context where it is practiced
  • discuss ethical, societal, and environmental issues within their own and others' professional practice.

Sustainability labelling

The course is sustainability-related, which means that at least one of the learning outcomes clearly shows that the course content meets at least one of the University of Gothenburg's confirmed sustainability criteria.

Form of teaching

The course is given as a distance course.

Teaching takes place through scheduled lectures, seminars and workshops, study visits,
literature studies as well as individual and group based tutoring.

The language of instruction is English.

Examination formats

The learning outcomes are examined through

  • a written action plan
  • discussion and oral presentations
  • written assignments
  • oral opposition on another student’s text or presentation.

Submission of complements to a carried-out examination may be allowed. The
possibility to complement an examination is assessed individually and decided by the
examiner. This is done through assignments given by the examiner and within a
specified time frame.

A student who was unable to attend an examination can, when possible, be given the
opportunity for an alternative assignment or another form of assessment.

If a student who has been failed twice for the same examination element wishes to change examiner before the next examination session, such a request is to be granted unless there are specific reasons to the contrary (Chapter 6 Section 22 HF).

If a student has received a certificate of disability study support from the University of
Gothenburg with a recommendation of adapted examination and/or adapted forms of
assessment, an examiner may decide, if this is consistent with the course’s intended learning outcomes and provided that no unreasonable resources would be needed, to grant the student adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment.

If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, the student must be offered at least two examination sessions in addition to ordinary examination sessions. These sessions are to be spread over a period of at least one year but no more than two years after the course has been discontinued/changed. The same applies to placement and internship (VFU) except that this is restricted to only one further examination session.

If a student has been notified that they fulfil the requirements for being a student at
Riksidrottsuniversitetet (RIU student), to combine elite sports activities with studies, the examiner is entitled to decide on adaptation of examinations if this is done in accordance with the Local rules regarding RIU students at the University of Gothenburg.
