Content

The course provides the student with a further introduction to foundational artistic techniques and processes, articulating the possibilities within craft. Through a set of individual projects, the student investigates a broad range of artistic techniques and methods, with a focus on materiality and place. By working with locally sourced materials and tools of choice, the student begins to develop an understanding of how access to resources influences craft processes. The student continues to explore the overarching concept of craft through projects that problematise common perceptions of methods used in material formation. Further, the course provides a continued investigation into the emergent behaviour of material and its seasonal variations.

Introductions to non-programme-specific campus workshops broaden the student’s skill set and provide access to a range of tools and equipment, enabling new approaches to artistic practice. Further, language and communication skills related to creative processes are developed, training the student’s ability to coherently express ideas and define artistic concepts in dialogue.

Objectives

On successful completion of the course the student will be able to

Knowledge and Understanding

  • account for the implications of the use of tools for workflow, and achieving artistic results

  • exemplify how emergent behaviour in materials advances the exploration of artistic ideas

Competence and Skills

  • craft and integrate custom-made tools relating to the concept of jig, into their artistic project
  • explore the interconnection between creative expression and place through the intentional selection and use of local materials
  • apply principles of oscillation, integrating concepts such as balance, motion, and rhythm into their work
  • execute practical assignments after workshop introductions in different materials and techniques

Judgement and Approach

  • synthesise insights by reflecting on the outcomes of their artistic processes
  • reflect on how place has impacted the use and selection of local resources.

Sustainability labelling

The course is sustainability-focused, which means that at least one of the learning outcomes clearly shows that the course content meets at least one of the University of Gothenburg’s confirmed sustainability criteria. The content also constitutes the course's main focus.

Form of teaching

Teaching takes place in the form of applied exercises, seminars, workshops, reviews, and tutoring both individually and in groups.

Language of instruction is English.

Examination formats

The learning outcomes are examined through

  • oral presentations of visually documented artistic process
  • oral presentation at text seminars
  • workshop maintenance sessions
  • curated visual portfolio presented at the end-of-term review.

Complementation of an examined student performance may be allowed. The possibility of complementation is assessed on an individual basis and decided by the examiner. Complementation is carried out through the supplementary assignments determined by the examiner and within a specified timeframe.

Absence from examination may be replaced with another form of examination after the examiner's assessment.

If a student who has been failed twice for the same examination element wishes to change examiner before the next examination session, such a request is to be granted unless there are specific reasons to the contrary (Chapter 6 Section 22 HF).

If a student has received a certificate of disability study support from the University of Gothenburg with a recommendation of adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment, an examiner may decide, if this is consistent with the course’s intended learning outcomes and provided that no unreasonable resources would be needed, to grant the student adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment.

If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, the student must be offered at least two examination sessions in addition to ordinary examination sessions. These sessions are to be spread over a period of at least one year but no more than two years after the course has been discontinued/changed. The same applies to placement and internship (VFU) except that this is restricted to only one further examination session.

If a student has been notified that they fulfil the requirements for being a student at Riksidrottsuniversitetet (RIU student), to combine elite sports activities with studies, the examiner is entitled to decide on adaptation of examinations if this is done in accordance with the Local rules regarding RIU students at the University of Gothenburg.

Grades

The grading scale comprises: Pass (G) and Fail (U).

Course evaluation

Students are given the opportunity to evaluate the course anonymously at the end of the course. The results of and possible changes to the course will be shared with students who participated in the evaluation and students who are starting the course.
