The following applied for the autumn semester 2026.
The entrance examination for the bachelor's programme in improvisation consists of two rounds. For round 1, you upload three videos of yourself singing or playing your instrument, either solo or accompanied by one or more fellow musicians. At least two of the pieces in round 1 must be performed with fellow musicians. Read more under Instructions and criteria for video recordings on this page. If you pass round 1, you will receive an invitation to round 2 in early February. Audition 2 will be held on site at the Academy of Music and Drama (Eklandagatan 86 in Gothenburg) in week 9 (23 February – 25 February).
Round 1
Round 1 involves playing or singing and improvising over two pieces of your choice (max. 6 minutes per piece).
You must also perform your own interpretation of one of the three compulsory songs:
- Juju (Wayne Shorter)
- Briggen Blue Bird av Hull (Evert Taube)
- Fire and Rain (James Taylor)
An interpretation could, for example, involve you:
- rearranging the song
- changing the style, expression or feeling
- creating a new musical form
- writing your own lyrics to an instrumental suggestion
- giving the song your own artistic touch in some other way
This part may also last a maximum of 6 minutes, including improvisation.
Round 2
Audition round 2 will be held on site at the Academy of Music and Drama (Eklandagatan 86 in Gothenburg). If it is impossible for you to attend the audition in person, it can be done remotely via SlideRoom and Zoom. Detailed instructions for audition round 2 will be sent together with the invitation by email in February. The auditions cover elements of ear training, sight-reading, ensemble playing, rhythm and accompaniment.
Requirements for video recordings

- The sound must be of good quality without too much room acoustics and without distortion and noise.
- The films must have high image quality with good sharpness and light. The recordings must be uploaded in the following permitted file formats: MP4 or MOV. Other file formats are not allowed.
- If the instructions are not followed and the video files are found to have been modified in any way, your submitted work samples may be deemed invalid.
