African Languages: Typology and Linguistic Structures
Summary
Along with an introduction to language typology as a scientific field, this course gives you the opportunity to further develop your understanding of linguistic structures in general and in African languages in particular.
About
The focus is on sound systems, morphology and syntax, as well as on searching for information about the structure of individual languages, presenting such information in written form and discussing various linguistic issues. In addition, the course deals with reading and writing strategies relevant to academic communication. Through writing exercises and analysis of, for example, scientific articles and bachelor's theses, you practice the ability to present, discuss and write scientific text in English.
Prerequisites and selection
Entry requirements
To be admitted to the course, students must have completed (a) a minimum of 5 hec from the course AF1111 Introduction to Linguistics and African Languages, and 15 hec from courses in non-European languages spoken in Africa or 15 hec in linguistics, alternatively (b) a minimum of 30 hec in linguistics, or the equivalent
Exception is made to the requirement for Swedish as a general entry requirement.
Selection
Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 165 credits.
