The International Dimensions and Effects of Populism (IDEoPOP)
Short description
IDEoPOP seeks to consolidate the study of the international dimensions of populism as a research program, shaping a new generation of scholars and developing policy-relevant insights on how to address the international consequences of populism.
The focus is on the ideational, institutional, diplomatic, and communicative international dimensions of populism. The School of Global Studies leads the research on the institutional dimension, under Work Package 2: “Populism in International and Regional Organizations: Reshaping international cooperation”.
About the research program
IDEoPOP is structured in four work packages in line with the focus on the (1) ideational, (2) institutional, (3) diplomatic, and (4) communicative dimensions of populism.
The School of Global Studies leads Work Package 2 — “Populism in International and Regional Organizations: Reshaping international cooperation” — which aims to unpack how populist actors shape countries’ strategies and policies with regard to regional and international organizations and multilateral institutions. The researchers also examine what the effects of these strategies and policies are for the so-called liberal international order.
The project has close synergies with the other work packages within the network:
- Work package 1 looks at the ideational conceptions that guide populist relations with international institutions.
- Work package 3 examines the diplomatic practices that populists deploy in multilateral organizations.
- Work package 4 investigates how contestation of multilateral institutions is used for purposes of domestic mobilization.
While there will also be a range of other research outputs, the most important component of the School of Global Studies' contribution are the PhD projects:
- Ivo Joller, Participation and Pushback – (Dis)engagement of Populist Governments in International Organisations.
- Evangelia Kapeli, Populist Governments and the Reshaping of the European Union.
Output
"We need to talk about populism and how it affects world politics."
In this episode of Academic Quarter (a film series from the University of Gothenburg), Kilian Spandler explains what the success of populist parties and leaders around the world means for cooperation in addressing global societal challenges. The film was recorded in October 2021.
In this video abstract, Kilian Spandler talks about his book Contestations of the Liberal International Order.
