Short description

This project investigates whether proton beam therapy for rectal and anal cancer can reduce treatment-related toxicity and improve patients' quality of life.

Aim of the research

The aim of this research is to investigate proton beam therapy in terms of treatment-related toxicity, health-related quality of life and biological markers during and after radiotherapy, comparing proton beam therapy with conventional photon therapy for pelvic cancers. The research is conducted within two ongoing Swedish randomised controlled trials involving patients with rectal and anal cancer. In addition, the cost-effectiveness of proton beam therapy compared with photon therapy will be evaluated.

Two randomised controlled trials

This research is based on two randomised controlled trials, SWANCA and PRORECT. The studies are being conducted at the Skandion Clinic in Uppsala and at the radiotherapy departments of the university hospitals in Lund, Uppsala, Umeå and Stockholm.
