Parcel locker locations and sustainable urban logistics in Gothenburg

Gothenburg is receiving more parcels than ever, but more deliveries can also mean more traffic, emissions and pressure on streets, entrances and public spaces. This project examines how the location of parcel lockers affects everyday parcel collection, returns and delivery work.
By studying selected locker sites in Gothenburg, we explore whether different locations make it easier or harder for people to walk, cycle, use public transport or combine parcel collection and returns with other trips, and whether delivery operators can service lockers efficiently with cargo bikes, electric vehicles or other low-emission options.
Parcel lockers are not automatically sustainable. Their contribution depends on where they are placed, how people use them, how deliveries are made, and how well they fit into the surrounding urban environment. The project will produce practical, site-level knowledge to support the City of Gothenburg’s work with sustainable urban logistics, e-commerce delivery and liveable urban environments.
