Published

Acclaimed performing artist Karl Dyall is joining the Artist in Residence program, which is funded by the Sten A Olsson Foundation. With over four decades of experience, he will be a valuable source of inspiration for the next generation of musical theatre artists.

Karl Dyall has been a leading figure in the Swedish performing arts scene since the 1980s, and is widely regarded as one of the key individuals responsible for popularising street dance in Sweden. He has enjoyed a successful career in dance, choreography, singing and acting, and has received numerous awards for his work in musicals and stage productions. He has received several Guldmasken awards, the equivalent of the Guldbagge in Swedish private theatre. He is also well known to many for his TV appearances in Rederiet and NileCity 105.6. SVT also dedicated an episode of the series Mästaren to him, which highlights some of Sweden’s most influential artists.

In addition to his long career in musical theatre, Karl Dyall has made a significant impact as a choreographer and as one of the founders of the influential dance group BouncE. His artistic work has also taken him to international stages, including the Apollo Theater in Harlem, New York, where he performed in From Sammy with Love.

Sharing experiences

“I’m looking forward to settling into the creative environment at the Academy. Being able to work closely with future musical theatre performers as Artist in Residence is a privilege. I will get to share my journey while also being challenged by their energy in new artistic collaborations,” says Karl Dyall.

“A unique combination of artistic expression, knowledge, and stage presence can challenge and elevate tomorrow’s performers. When students meet an artist with Karl Dyall’s experience, new perspectives emerge and their exploration of the Artist in Residence program deepens,” says Madeleine Olsson Eriksson, Chair of the Sten A Olsson Foundation.

A new resource for musical theatre students

Since 2018, the Sten A Olsson Foundation funded Artist in Residence program has brought internationally renowned artists to work closely with students. Karl Dyall’s extensive experience will provide musical theatre students with valuable insight into his working methods and professional background.

“Karl Dyall is a versatile and highly respected artist whose work has left a lasting mark on the Swedish performing arts scene. We are delighted to welcome him and look forward to benefiting from his inspiration and expertise,” says Karin Rickardsson, program supervisor for the Musical Theatre course at the Academy of Music and Drama.

First residency visit: 6 May

Karl Dyall will visit the Academy of Music and Drama for the first time on 6 May. During his visit, he will share video clips and photos from his career in conversation with Catharina Bergil, and the musical theatre students will have the chance to ask questions. Afterwards, Karl Dyall will mingle with students, guests and representatives from the Sten A Olsson Foundation.
