International Craft Conference in Mariestad in Sweden

Published

The Biennial International Conference for the Craft Sciences (BICCS) is held on September 20–22. The conference aims to show the breadth of craft research and encourages participants to use formats other than traditional research papers to communicate their research.

“We want to show the breadth of craft research, partly by highlighting the craftsman's perspectives and partly by drawing attention to Craft Science as an interdisciplinary research area,” says Anneli Palmsköld, Professor in Craft Sciences and Head at the Department of Conservation.

BICCS takes place on September 20–22 in Mariestad, Sweden and presents conference contributions that span over the wide field of crafts. During the conference, traditional boat building, a weaving performance, house building from recycled materials and the documentation of the aesthetic expression of plants coexist under one roof.

“Even though we come from different traditions and academic disciplines, what unites us is the work of the hand,” says Anneli Palmsköld.

For BICCS organisers, it has been important to encourage participants to use non-traditional research outputs. Material, sound and movement are often important elements in the methodology and empirical data of craft research, and there is a specific need to use alternative formats, other than traditional research papers, to present craft research.
