Film about Critical Heritage Studies

As part of her internship at the Centre for Critical Heritage Studies at the University of Gothenburg (CCHS), Anna Vild Rundbom has produced a short film about critical heritage studies and the questions that shape the field today.

The film explores how heritage is not only about monuments, archives and objects, but also about memory, identity, belonging, lived experiences and the stories societies choose to preserve, highlight or forget.

The film is aimed at students, researchers, cultural workers and a broader public interested in culture, memory, identity and the role of heritage in contemporary society. It also seeks to make critical heritage studies more accessible outside academia.

Want to give a voice to research

Coming from a background in music, performing arts and ethnology, this internship has given her the opportunity to explore new ways of communicating research through film, voice and visual storytelling.

“What drew me to critical heritage studies was the field’s ability to connect history with contemporary human questions about identity, belonging, power and memory. Through the film, I wanted to create something that feels both intellectually grounded and emotionally accessible,” says Anna Vild Rundbom.

“The internship at CCHS has deepened my understanding of how cultural heritage is constantly shaped in relation to the present, and how important it is to find forms that allow research to reach beyond academic rooms.”

For the film, Anna has interviewed three researchers who are part of the research center to gain insight into different examples of critical cultural heritage research through different subjects. Anna has also followed various projects during the spring to participate in excursions with students and various research projects. Now a series of short films in the form of reels are waiting to be released on the center's various social media.

“We are so happy that Anna has chosen to do her internship with us. We see it as very valuable to receive support from Anna's knowledge and experience and contribution to spreading information about our activities and reaching out with research," says Annelie Sjölander-Lindqvist, director at CCHS.
