CARe Workshop Targets Bacterial Infections in Medical Devices

The workshop “Mitigating Emerging Threats from Resistant Bacterial Infections in Association with Medical Devices”, aimed to foster dialogue, share insights, and spur innovations in combatting bacterial infections, particularly those associated with medical devices.

The event attracted a diverse range of expertise including clinicians and representatives from eight leading companies in the medical device sector, emphasizing the collaborative nature of this initiative.

Clinical insights and research priorities

Key discussions revolved around the impact of orthopaedic device-related infections, highlighting the need for better prophylaxis, advanced diagnostic methods, improved implants and effective antimicrobials with reduced toxicity. The clinicians' presentations underscored the urgency in addressing these healthcare challenges.

Innovative industrial strategies

The industrial segment of the workshop showcased cutting-edge antimicrobial strategies, such as implant surface modifications and novel wound dressing technologies. The emphasis was on innovative approaches that balance effectiveness with reduced antimicrobial resistance risk.

Future directions and considerations

Special remarks were made on the importance of early-stage consideration of industrial scaling in research and the parallel need to  develop a methodological toolbox for assessing new antimicrobial strategies. This event marks a significant stride in the collaborative fight against antimicrobial resistance in medical devices.
