Entry requirements

Admittance to the course requires a bachelor’s degree in architechture, building crafts, conservation or equivalent.

Content

The course focuses on the wooden material in our built heritage, and how we decribe it. The preconditions the forest and trees needs to create the material is studied. The processing that gives the wooden elements some of its features will be experienced in the workshops. Field studies and workshops will provide training in recognizing, documenting and describing wooden material in our built heritage.

Objectives

On successful completion of the course the student will be able to:

Knowledge and understanding

• identify some of the most common wooden materials within the Nordic built heritage,
• identify and describe methods for wood processing,
• be familiar with methods for afield documentation of wooden material,

Competence and skills

• Communicate material properties and processing methods for wood,

Judgement and approach

• assess wooden material within the built heritage, and
• discuss materials and methods within existent wooden constructions, including additions and changes, from the perspective of conservation.

Sustainability labelling

The course is sustainability-related, which means that at least one of the learning outcomes clearly shows that the course content meets at least one of the University of Gothenburg's confirmed sustainability criteria.

Form of teaching

The course is implemented primarily as distance learning, with a few compulsory workshops and examinations that requires presence at campus.

The course includes:

• Lectures
• Seminars
• Practical work in the lab and studio
• Field work
• Individual tasks and group projects

Language of instruction: Swedish

English and Nordic languages may occur in literature and lectures.

Examination formats

Module 1: Seminarier (seminars), 4,5 hp
Module 2: Inlämningsuppgift, (written assignment), 3 hp

If a student who has been failed twice for the same examination element wishes to change examiner before the next examination session, such a request is to be granted unless there are specific reasons to the contrary (Chapter 6 Section 22 HF).

If a student has received a certificate of disability study support from the University of Gothenburg with a recommendation of adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment, an examiner may decide, if this is consistent with the course’s intended learning outcomes and provided that no unreasonable resources would be needed, to grant the student adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment.

If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, the student must be offered at least two examination sessions in addition to ordinary examination sessions. These sessions are to be spread over a period of at least one year but no more than two years after the course has been discontinued/changed. The same applies to placement and internship (VFU) except that this is restricted to only one further examination session.

If a student has been notified that they fulfil the requirements for being a student at Riksidrottsuniversitetet (RIU student), to combine elite sports activities with studies, the examiner is entitled to decide on adaptation of examinations if this is done in accordance with the Local rules regarding RIU students at the University of Gothenburg.

Grades

The course offers the grades Pass (G) and Fail (U).

A passing grade on the entire course requires a Pass (G) in all modules.

Course evaluation

The results of and possible changes to the course will be shared with students who participated in the evaluation and students who are starting the course.

Other regulations

Costs:
All expenses that may occur in connection with the course, including literature, materials, personal tools and protective gear, and travelling to sites or other travelling connected to the course, are paid for by the student.
