Increased Interest in Economics at the University of Gothenburg
Interest in economics at the School of Business, Economics and Law at the University of Gothenburg is rising ahead of the autumn semester of 2026. The number of applicants has increased overall, and the introductory course in economics has grown from 563 to 705 applicants – an increase of approximately 25 percent compared with the previous year.
Demand is also increasing for courses at the intermediate and advanced levels, including in microeconomics, econometrics, and portfolio theory.
Overall, this year’s figures show particularly strong demand for education in economics. The subject provides tools to analyze major societal challenges such as climate change, economic inequality, and the impact of AI on the labor market.
“The increase reflects both a general rise in applications to the University of Gothenburg and a growing interest in economics as a subject. A degree in economics combines theoretical insights with practical skills, for example in data analysis. This broad skill set is attractive on the labor market, in both the public and private sectors,” says Andreas Dzemski, Senior Lecturer in Economics and Assistant Head of Department at the Department of Economics.
