PhD Programme in Economics at the University of Gothenburg

The doctoral programme consists of approximately two years of coursework followed by three years of thesis research, amounting to a total of 240 higher education credits.
During the first year, doctoral students take core courses in mathematics, microeconomic theory, macroeconomics, and econometrics. These courses provide the theoretical and methodological foundation necessary for advanced research in economics.
In the second year, students continue with a mix of compulsory and elective courses. The elective courses allow them to deepen their knowledge in their chosen fields of specialization and to begin shaping the focus of their future research.
After completing the coursework, students dedicate their time to developing and writing their doctoral theses. They are also expected to engage in a limited amount of teaching, gaining valuable pedagogical experience. Upon successful completion of the programme, the PhD degree is awarded. All PhD positions are fully funded.
