Courses

What is unique, and mandatory for ASSESS Research School is its five tailored research education questions containing 37,5 hp. The courses are ”blended” in their character, which means that 2-3 campus days combined with seminars, lectures and other activities online via GU:s educational platform Canvas.

ASSESS I: Pedagogical Assessment and Knowledge Measurements, 7.5 credits

The course is given as the first course in the graduate school as an orientation in and introduction to assessment and knowledge measurement in different education systems. The course provides a historical and contextual overview in the field of assessment and evaluation and modern theories and methods for knowledge measurement are treated.

ASSESS II: Introduction to Quantitative Methods in Educational Research, 7.5 credits

The course provides an insight into how design, measurement and analysis form the basis of quantitative research methodology and how these aspects can be utilized to best investigate research questions of different kinds. The course deals with basic questions of philosophy of education and philosophy of science, how investigations should be structured so that they can provide a basis for reliable conclusions and what is important for the reliability of measurements. Knowledge of basic concepts such as reliability and validity is deepened both theoretically and in applications of various kinds.

ASSESS III: Basic Statistics for Research in Educational Sciences, 7.5 credits

In the course, we will go through basic statistical concepts in an applied way and the participants will practice analyzing data using statistical software. Participants will learn basic data management and techniques for descriptive and inferential statistics.

ASSESS IV: Assessment of and Validity of Cognitive and Non-Cognitive Performance, 7.5 credits

The course deals with the assessment of knowledge in terms of cognitive and non-cognitive performance and competencies and its predictive abilities. The question of validity is central to all knowledge measurements and concerns questions about how well it is possible to assess and measure pupils' knowledge and other types of competences. Furthermore, validity is about how instruments can capture what you are looking for, what conclusions can be drawn from the information and what consequences the knowledge measurements have for the students.

ASSESS V: Regression Analysis in Research in Educational Sciences, 7.5 credits

The course deals with regression analysis, which is a quantitative method that aims to measure causal relationships between different types of information or variables. This is one of the basic quantitative methods courses necessary to get ahead with more advanced quantitative analyses. In the course, participants are given analytical tools to predict an outcome of interest and to investigate causal relationships between the outcome variable and possible explanatory variables. The course focuses on assessment questions and data is available for participants to investigate questions in the field of educational sciences/assessment area.
