About Fredrik Lannestam Holmelin
I am a PhD student since 2020 in Leif Eriksson's group, performing research in drug discovery with the use of sophisticated computer modeling and supercomputers.
My project is transdisciplinary, combining chemistry research in the form of computer-aided drug design with exploration of educational applications for visualization tools and simulations (part of the CUL doctoral programme). We base the educational studies on cognitive science learning perspectives and Design-based research approaches.
A substantial part of my project is to support the development of educational applications of visualization technology, by providing professional development to practicing teachers (mainly at the high school level). To this end, I have collaborated extensively with the The national resource center for chemistry teachers in Sweden, KRC.
Ongoing developments include initiating broad-scale development toward harmonizing how low- and medium grade visualization tools (running on existing classroom devices i.e. laptop computers) are used in chemistry classrooms, in order to support a responsible and purposeful modernized teaching repertoire. This includes that teachers look to computational chemistry research approaches and AI uses to stay attuned with technological developments thereby giving students a better chance to learn realistic and contemporary research methodology.
