The Department of Chemistry and Molecular Biology conducts high-quality research and education in the areas of chemical sciences and molecular life sciences.

Research at the Department includes analytical chemistry, atmospheric science, biochemistry, inorganic chemistry, medicinal chemistry, organic chemistry, physical chemistry, cell biology, genetics, genomics, microbiology, molecular biology and structural biology. Our research groups have many interdisciplinary collaborations, both nationally and internationally, and make a strong contribution to the University of Gothenburg's top ranking in Life Science according to the 2020 Academic Ranking of World Universities (ShanghaiRanking).

The Department provides undergraduate programmes in chemistry, organic and medicinal chemistry, molecular biology, genomics and systems biology as well as the bachelor’s programme in pharmacy. The many elective courses in our education allow our students to combine different subject areas into a unique profile in Life Science. The Department also offers doctoral education within the fields of chemical sciences, molecular life sciences and environmental sciences in a stimulating international environment.

The Department is located on two campuses. You can find us in the Chemistry Building on Campus Johanneberg and in Lundberg Laboratory on Campus Medicinareberget.
