Dr. Despoina Andrioti Bygvraa is a public health researcher with more than 20 years of international experience in health policy, workforce development, and maritime health. Between 2001 and 2005, she worked at the World Health Organization Regional Office for Europe in Copenhagen, contributing to health policy analysis and health workforce planning across Europe.
For over 15 years, she has taught Public Health, Health Economics, and Health Policy in BA and MSc programmes, while also developing international training courses. Four of her publications have been adopted as core readings in higher education curricula.
Her research focuses on the public health, safety health and wellbeing of seafarers and fishermen. Her work includes projects such as Economic Analysis of Seafarers’ Repatriations, Health and Safety Implications of Electronic Monitoring on Fishing Vessels in the North Sea and Developing a Safety Intervention Programme for Fishers in Bangladesh.
She is the author of more than 100 scientific publications and serves as an EU expert in health workforce planning. Her broader research interests include public health on ships and expedition vessels, occupational safety, maritime health systems, and human capital and skills development.
