Forskningsområden Björn Halleröd har i huvudsak forskat om levnadsförhållanden, fördelning av ekonomiska resurser och fattigdom. Forskningen har fokuserat på orsaker till och konsekvenser av utsatta social positioner. Fördelning av resurser och arbete inom hushåll har utgjort en viktig gren av forskning. På senar tid har Halleröds forskning allt mer fokuserat på longitudinella analyser av olika livsfaser. Det gäller studier av det åldrande samhället och övergången från arbetsliv till livet som pensionär och äldre, ungas väg från utbildningssystemet till arbetsmarknaden och försörjningsproblem bland personer med svag förankring på arbetsmarknaden. Sedan 2012 leder han ett omfattande projekt om barnfattigdom i utvecklingsländer och från och med 2014 är han engagerad i ledningen av det forskningscentret AgeCap och bedriver bland annat forskning om hur gener och den sociala omgivningen samverkar i relation till Alzheimers sjukdom.
Undervisning och handledning Halleröd har främst undervisat inom områdena kvantitativ metod, social stratifiering, levnadsförhållanden och socialpolitik. Inom forskarutbildningen har han som handledare varit involverad i ett flertal avhandlingsprojekt med tämligen vitt skilda frågeställningar, allt från kvantitativa longitudinella analyser av social exkludering till studier av sociala relationer på internet.
Samverkan Halleröd har under en lång tid haft en rad uppdrag, inte minst inom Vetenskapsrådet. Han var ledamot och vice ordförande av Ämnesrådet för humaniora och samhällsvetenskap under åren 2001-2006. Efter det har han varit engagerad i Vetenskapsrådets arbete med forskningsinfrastruktur och han är sedan 2012 ledamot av Rådet för infrastruktur (RFI). Han har även haft omfattande expertuppdrag åt EU-kommissionen i frågor som rör fattigdom och social exkludering.
