We are living in times of environmental, social and economic crisis. At such critical moment of planetary and societal history, education plays a critical role to equip students with the required knowledge, skills and attitude, and this has resulted in the development of the broad concept of Education for Sustainable Development, ESD. Although ESD, by now, appears to be an established notion, knowledge around pedagogical approaches that support students’ learning in today’s precarious times are still challenging. Recent research highlighted that lack of well-developed and sufficient pedagogical approaches is one of the factors affecting the implementation of ESD.
In this workshop, among other things, participants will discuss the following key questions:
• How can education at the Faculty of Social Sciences be transformed or reoriented towards sustainability challenges and encapsulate complexity that ESD requires?
• How can staff confront and challenge “traditional” and taken for granted pedagogical approaches within social sciences?
• What support is needed to upscale the engagement with ESD at Faculty of Social Sciences?
