About Ellen Breitholtz

In my PhD I suggested an analysis of pragmatic meaning in dialogue which assumes that enthymemes play a role for coherence and meaning in interaction. An enthymeme is -- from the point of view of classical logic -- a logically incomplete argument, which draws on premises and topoi, principles of reasoning which are acceptable to the listeners in the context. In the years following my PhD I have continued to work on various aspects of pragmatic reasoning in the projects "Incremental Reasoning in Dialogue" (InCRED), Dialogical Reasoning in Patients with Schizophrenia (DRiPS)(PI), and "Gothenburg Research Initiative for Politically Emerging Systems" (GRIPES). In 2020 I published the monograph "Enthymemes and Topoi in Dialogue - the use of common sense reasoning in conversation" which is available, open access, at https://brill.com/view/title/58383 .
