Department of Philosophy, Linguistics, Theory of ScienceAbout Christine Howes
I study coordination in dialogue from a range of perspectives, using techniques from psychology, formal and socio-linguistics and artificial intelligence.
My main interest is linguistic interaction, specifically how people use the resources provided by language in conversation to coordinate their understanding. I am particularly interested in phenomena that are often considered to be outside the remit of linguistics, such as repair and compound contributions, which my PhD thesis focused on.
I have used a wide range of techniques and sources to investigate these phenomena, including corpus linguistics, experiments with human participants on real-time text chat dialogue (using the DiET chat tool), machine learning on consultations with mental health patients and their therapists, formal grammars (especially Dynamic Syntax) and conversation analysis methods on multimodal data.
I am a member of the Centre for Linguistic Theory and Studies in Probability.
For my full list of publications, and the research projects I am currently working on, please see my website at www.christinehowes.com.
