Position
The course is included in the Audiology Programme and is given during semester 5.
The course may be included in the following programmes:
1) Audiology Programme (V1AUM)
Main field of study with advanced study
Entry requirements
Admission to the course requires a passing grade in AU3040 Scientific Methods 1, 7.5 credits, and at least 60 credits from the courses Audiology 1–4 (AU1010, AU2020, AU3030, AU4010). In addition, registration on all courses from semesters 1–4 of the Audiology Programme at the University of Gothenburg are required.
Content
The course builds upon and develops prior knowledge from Scientific Methods 1. The aim is for students to formulate a well-defined and feasible project, and to write a project plan, which will form the basis for the final thesis (Bahelor’s level) to be conducted during semester 6. The course also includes instruction in literature search and reference management via the Biomedical Library, as well as a sustainability perspective in audiological research.
Objectives
After completing the course with a passing grade, the student will be able to:
Knowledge and Understanding
- Define a scientific audiological research question and relate it to previous research,
- Orally and in writing, explain and justify the choice of research question, method, and, where applicable, statistical methods.
Competence and Skills
- Formulate a project plan based on a scientific research question,
- constructively and critically appraise a project plan,
- orally respond to, i.e., defend, argue for, and discuss own project plan.
Judgement and Approach
- Reflect on the relationship between the research question and global health/sustainable development.
Sustainability labelling
Form of teaching
Lectures, seminars, and practical exercises.
Language of instruction: English and Swedish
Examination formats
The course is assessed through the completion of a written project plan (3 credits), oral opposition to another student’s project plan (0.5 credits), and oral response to one’s own project plan (0.5 credits). In addition, attendance at other mandatory elements as specified in the schedule is required.
If a component is failed, written or oral supplementation is required.
Written submissions that are late or not completed according to instructions are considered invalid and will not be assessed. This also applies to any replacement assignments. In such cases, one (1) additional opportunity will be granted to submit the replacement assignment.
Absence from mandatory components results in either a new opportunity at a rescheduled session or a written or oral replacement assignment. The responsible teacher will decide which alternative applies.
After this, retaking the course will be required the next time it is offered.
If a student who has been failed twice for the same examination element wishes to change examiner before the next examination session, such a request is to be granted unless there are specific reasons to the contrary (Chapter 6 Section 22 HF).
If a student has received a certificate of disability study support from the University of Gothenburg with a recommendation of adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment, an examiner may decide, if this is consistent with the course’s intended learning outcomes and provided that no unreasonable resources would be needed, to grant the student adapted examination and/or adapted forms of assessment.
If a course has been discontinued or undergone major changes, the student must be offered at least two examination sessions in addition to ordinary examination sessions. These sessions are to be spread over a period of at least one year but no more than two years after the course has been discontinued/changed. The same applies to placement and internship (VFU) except that this is restricted to only one further examination session.
If a student has been notified that they fulfil the requirements for being a student at Riksidrottsuniversitetet (RIU student), to combine elite sports activities with studies, the examiner is entitled to decide on adaptation of examinations if this is done in accordance with the Local rules regarding RIU students at the University of Gothenburg.
Grades
The grades awarded are Pass (G) and Fail (U).
Course evaluation
Course evaluation takes place both in writing and orally in dialogue with students. The course coordinator compiles an analysis of the evaluation and proposes improvements. The analysis and proposals are shared with students and published on the University of Gothenburg’s learning platform, Canvas. The results of and possible changes to the course will be shared with students who participated in the evaluation and students who are starting the course.
