The Modern Scandinavian Economic History
About
The course is a survey of economic development in Sweden, Finland, Denmark and Norway from 1800 to the present. The first part deals with early agrarian transformations and the industrial revolutions in the late nineteenth century. Focus is placed on common as well as country specific characteristics, such as resource endowments, conditions for agriculture, access to foreign markets and industrialisation patterns.
The second part deals with the causes behind and the effects of the rapid economic growth in the twentieth century. The course has a keen eye on the contrast between the successful developments of the Scandinavian countries and the dismal growth record of many of today’s less developed countries. An issue at stake is whether we can learn anything from the Scandinavian experiences.
