In this course, you are introduced to the norms and traditions that form the basis of Somali orthography and how they relate to the language as it is used today. You will practice writing and editing texts in Standard Somali, focusing on accuracy, clarity, and readability.
The course is offered entirely online, with lectures, seminars, and practical exercises on a digital learning platform.
The language of instruction is Swedish and Somali, or English and Somali when the course is given in English. Throughout the course, you will learn to assess linguistic correctness in Somali texts, apply basic linguistic and language-planning perspectives, and reflect on the role of written language in professional and social contexts.
Assessment is based on mandatory written assignments and a final exam.
Prerequisites and selection
Entry requirements
To be admitted to the course, students must have completed the course SOL101 Somali Grammar I for Mother Tongue Speakers Somali and SOL102 On the Somali Language Situation for Mother Tongue Speakers, or the two former courses SOL110 and SOL120, or the equivalent.
Selection
Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 165 credits.
