Summary
This course provides theoretical insight into research on Japanese literature and culture, develops your ability to read and discuss academic texts in Japanese and English, and prepares you for independent scholarly work within the Master’s degree.
About
This course gives you a solid theoretical foundation in and knowledge of the current research situation in Japanese literary and cultural studies. You will practise independently searching for and critically engaging with scholarly sources, including intensive and extensive reading of academic texts in Japanese and English, and you will use academic discourse in seminars to discuss and argue at a scholarly level.
The course covers selected research results and theories concerning Japanese literature and culture, offers insight into current questions in the field from multiple perspectives—including social sciences and education studies—and highlights research specialisations on modern Japan from the 19th century to the present, including popular culture when relevant.
Taught in English and Japanese, this course forms part of the Master’s degree with Japanese as the main field of study and supports your independent project and advanced academic development.
Prerequisites and selection
Entry requirements
The requirement for admission to the course is that the following courses have been completed: JP1510, Japanese, Advanced course (15 credits) and JP1520, Japanese, Independent project for a Bachelor's degree (15 credits), or that the equivalent knowledge has been obtained. An additional requirement is English 6 from the Swedish upper-secondary school or the equivalent level from an internationally acknowledged test.

Selection is based upon the number of credits from previous university studies, maximum 285 credits
