Course Description
In this course students engage with various aspects of citizenship. It commences by exploring the heightened focus on the interrelations between citizenship and migration, different models of citizenship and integration, their inclusive and exclusive features. We discuss the theoretical models of citizenship – post-national, supranational, cosmopolitan, transnational – beyond and below the level of the nation-state. Theoretical and empirical conceptions of citizenship are also examined in relation to their practical translations with reference to local civil society action. The course surveys ways in which civil society and not-for-profit activity and social enterprise attempt to compensate for the failures of the welfare-state. We explore actors’ motivations, their ways of working, and the ways in which civil society tries to mitigate conditions of socio-economic marginalisation, assessing its responses to the markers and means of integration. National and international case studies are used to understand the action-oriented nature of citizenship. With a focus on citizenship and citizenship action (or the lack thereof) this course also explores Citizen Science and community research and its role in the context of migration.
