School of Excellence in Artic and Antarctic Learning, SEAL
Welcome to the School of Excellence in Arctic and Antarctic Learning, SEAL! We educate the next generation of researchers who will advance polar research both in Sweden and internationally.
The research school addresses the complex challenges of the polar regions with collective expertise across subject boundaries. Our interdisciplinary research environment is based on a strong partnership between some of Sweden's most prominent universities. Together, we offer an internationally competitive, field-based research school with state of the art infrastructure and integrated courses, under the supervision of leading national and international polar researchers. The research school encompasses the entire spectrum of polar expertise – from glaciology, oceanography and climate modeling, to radar, remote sensing, technology, social sciences, and indigenous perspectives. The research school will start in 2026 and is funded by the Swedish Research Council.
The polar regions – key areas in a changing climate
The polar regions play a crucial role in the Earth's system. Here, processes in the oceans, on land, and in the atmosphere interact in ways that affect the climate, societies, and people globally. These areas contain unique and sensitive ecosystems and are also important for international transport routes and natural resources.
The ice masses in Antarctica and Greenland are so large that they can change global sea levels. They also contain more than 90 percent of the world's fresh water. It is therefore urgent to advance knowledge about how the polar regions are changing and what consequences this may have for biodiversity, human living conditions, and the global climate system. The research school SEAL will play an important role in developing this knowledge and equipping next-generation polar researchers.
