Swedish CArdiometabolic Registry Project (SCARP): epidemiological studies of cardiometabolic diseases in the entire Swedish population
Short description
SCARP (Swedish CArdiometabolic Registry Project) is a national research project that uses extensive Swedish registry data to map the occurrence, causes, comorbidity, and prognosis of heart failure and other cardiometabolic diseases, including ischemic heart disease, stroke, arrhythmias, congenital heart defects, obesity, diabetes, and endocrine disorders. The project encompasses the entire population of Sweden and enables detailed longitudinal analyses of risk factors, treatments, social determinants, and functional capacity. The aim is to generate new knowledge for prevention, targeted treatment, and improved public health in Sweden.
Background
Cardiometabolic diseases such as heart failure, ischemic heart disease, arrhythmias, stroke, diabetes, obesity, and endocrine disorders are among the most common causes of death in Sweden. The risk of developing and dying from these diseases has changed markedly over time. Mortality from myocardial infarction has declined, whereas heart failure, stroke, and obesity-related conditions are increasing, particularly among younger individuals. Combinations of several of these diseases and concurrent treatments have become more common, as has survival after serious conditions such as congenital heart defects, cancer, and endocrine diseases.
SCARP is based on a population-wide database, comprising all individuals born between 1923 and 2022 who were alive in 1968 or later. The project combines Swedish national registers, such as the National Patient Register and the Cause of Death Register maintained by the National Board of Health and Welfare, Statistics Sweden’s LISA register of population and socioeconomic data, the Military Conscription register from the Swedish Defence Conscription and Assessment Agency, and a large number of national quality registers (including SWEDEHEART, NDR, RiksSvikt, SPAHR, STRAX, SWENTRY, SCAAR, and SOReg).
The projects within SCARP are conducted through broad local and national collaboration, with support from the Swedish Heart-Lung Foundation.
