Future Faculty (FF) at Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, has long served as a vital platform for junior researchers seeking to advance their academic careers.

In this article, we speak with Associate Professor and Senior Lecturer Karin Christenson, a former member who shares insights from her time with FF, highlighting the organization’s role in fostering professional development and collaboration.

A Journey Through Future Faculty

Karin joined Future Faculty in 2016 and actively contributed to its mission as a member of the steering committee from 2020 to 2023. Her academic journey during this period was marked by significant progression. Initially holding a research position at the Department of Oral Microbiology and Immunology, Institute of Odontology, she later advanced to the role of Associate Professor in Immunology and currently serve as a Lecturer within the same department.

Motivation and Early Goals

When asked about her initial motivation to join FF, Karin cited encouragement from senior and former members. “The experience from previous members was that FF provided a good opportunity to meet other junior researchers at the same level,” she explained. Her primary goals at the time were to continue her research and eventually secure a university position.

Professional Development Through FF

FF played a pivotal role in Karin’s professional growth. “Mainly, it was the opportunity to discuss with other young researchers from various fields at the university,” she noted. This interdisciplinary exchange proved invaluable in broadening perspectives and fostering collaboration.

Impactful Resources and Events

Among the most influential aspects of FF were its seminars, which featured established researchers discussing essential topics such as grant applications, academic writing, and the path to becoming a docent. “These seminars always allotted time for the audience to ask questions, which was helpful for preparing for different challenges and tasks during my research career,” Karin shared.

Advice for Aspiring Researchers

For current FF members, she emphasized the importance of building a strong professional network. “Create a good network of researchers, both junior and senior, that you like and can cooperate well with,” she advised. Feedback from experienced colleagues can be instrumental in refining grant and job applications.

Strategies for Networking

One particularly effective initiative mentioned was the Sahlgrenska Academy Junior Research Symposium (SAJRS), organized by FF. “It’s a great way to let young scientists get the opportunity to present and discuss their research in a friendly environment,” she said, highlighting the symposium’s role in fostering meaningful academic connections.

Evolving Perspectives on Career Development

Reflecting on her career trajectory, Karin acknowledged the challenges faced by young researchers in securing university-funded positions. “It is quite hard for young researchers to get a career at the university, as the possibility to get a university-financed position is limited,” she observed.

Recommendations for Future Faculty

To further support its members, Karin encouraged FF to continue its current efforts while also considering the implementation of mentorship programs. “New members of FF will continuously come, and they need support and advice from others. I also think that mentorship from more senior researchers could be valuable for junior researchers that are about to start their career,” she concluded.
