FAME: Fjord Alien Microeukaryotes - New Drivers of Ecosystem Functioning?
Research project
Active research
Short description
FAME is about the spread of microscopic alien species and their impact on the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles, as well as on native marine biodiversity.
We will use foraminifera of the species Nonionella sp. T1 as a model organism. This species has spread along the entire west coast of Sweden, where it now thrives and has established large populations.
However, how this species affects the nitrogen and phosphorus cycles is unknown, as is its impact on native fjord communities. To fill this knowledge gap, we will identify the role Nonionella sp. T1 plays in the nutrient cycle in fjords and assess its impact on biodiversity.
