Walking tours about the colonial history and future of Gothenburg

Published

The curious will soon be able to take part in walking tours in Gothenburg that explore the city's colonial history through the use of sugar. The project is based on research at the Academy of Music and Drama and uses artistic expression and methods in dialogue with the museum world to create historical walks directly in the urban environment.

- With the Sugar Walks, we want to literally walk through Gothenburg's history and show how colonial traces, still visible in places in the city today, can open up new questions and future possibilities for the city, says project leader Cecilia Lagerström, professor of performance practices at the Academy of Music and Drama.

Cecilia Lagerström and Monica Sand, affiliated researcher at the Academy of Music and Drama, have received support from the Swedish Research Council for the project 'Sugar Walks: through the Decolonised Future of Gothenburg'. The aim is to disseminate the results of the research project 'The Sugar Games. New perspectives on Gothenburg's colonial history through the handling of sugar.' to a wider audience.

The Sugar Walks are organised in close collaboration with the Museum of Gothenburg, artists, researchers and students. By combining different knowledge and methods, the project aims to create a dialogue on how artistic research and the history of the city can change the way we look at urban development and work with audience engagement.

PLEASE NOTE: The Sugar Walks will take place in Autumn 2026. We will share all the information and exact dates well in advance.
