New monograph by visiting researcher, Dr Ruth Tatlow

Published

Ruth Tatlow’s new book focuses on Johann Sebastian Bach’s church cantatas. It is an easy-to-read guide reaching to the depth and heart of how Bach thought of and constructed his cantatas. It presents new research and insights into Bach's beliefs, methods, and aims in his cantata compositions, empowering the reader to explore other cantatas, and inviting the reader to listen to Bach's cantatas in a new way.

It starts with questions: What is a cantata? How and why did Bach compose his cantatas? What did cantatas mean to Bach and what do they mean today? The author addresses these questions through discussion of five of Bach's most beloved works enriched by newly researched insights.

Bach’s Church Cantatas is the third book to be published by Oxford University Press in their new ABS Guides series. It helps the listener better understand and appreciate the variety of Bach’s cantata styles and their relevance in the modern world beyond their original liturgical setting. It is written in an accessible style for both non-specialists and for those already familiar with Bach, and for the first-time experienced listener.
