National PhD program for Sustainable movement education in preschools and schools

The Swedish Research Council (VR) has funded a national PhD program for sustainable daily movement education in preschools and schools. The purpose is to strengthen the research basis in teacher education and to generate scientific knowledge about how preschools and schools can sustainably provide daily movement education embedded in school practices.

Swedish schools have for a long time had daily movement as an assignment, but many schools have had difficulties with living up to the assignment as there is a lack of knowledge about how this should be done in a sustainable way and with a content that meets the needs of children and young people.

— We want to change this by building up knowledge about how daily movement can be designed in school practice, says Suzanne Lundvall, professor, IKI.

The Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences (GIH), University of Gothenburg, Malmö University and Örebro University will take on the assignment to form a national doctoral (PhD) program for Sustainable movement education in preschool and compulsory school, including the preschool class and school-age educare. Main responsible is the Swedish School of Sport and Health Sciences (GIH). At IKI, two new PhD students will be recruited starting spring 2022.
