JMG Educates the Journalists of Tomorrow – and Expresses Support for Joakim Medin and Press Freedom.
At the Journalism Programme at the Department of Journalism, Media and Communication (JMG), University of Gothenburg, we educate the journalists of tomorrow with openness, critical inquiry, and respect for democratic dialogue at its core.
In this context, we view with deep concern that our Swedish colleague Joakim Medin is being prosecuted in Turkey this week — simply for practicing journalism. Reporting on protests, politics, and human rights is not a crime; it is at the very core of journalism’s mission.
As educators and researchers in journalism at JMG, we wish to express our strong support for press freedom and emphasize that attempts to silence journalistic work through legal action are in direct conflict with the values that underpin our teaching, research, and societal role – which is fundamental to every democratic society.
