Corals of the deep: a new podcast from the vessel Skagerak

Published

“It’s like stepping into a world that very few people ever get to see,” says marine biologist Rhian Waller. Listen to the new podcast Expedition Skagerak, where Rhian takes us into the depths of Bratten to explore its cold-water corals thriving hundreds of metres below the surface.

Recently, marine biologist Rhian Waller led a multi-day expedition onboard R/V Skagerak to Bratten, using a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) to get closer to these deep-sea coral communities and investigate how they are affected by fishing and other human activities.

Everything is going according to plan – until something happens to the ROV that no one could have anticipated, threatening the entire expedition…

An unfortunate incident: a pollock swam straight into the ROV’s propeller. Unlucky for both the ROV and the fish.
