Clarinettist Martin Fröst appointed visiting lecturer

From autumn, students at the Academy of Music and Drama, University of Gothenburg will have the opportunity to study with the world-renowned clarinettist and conductor, Martin Fröst. He is joining as the new Artist in Residence as part of the Stena Foundation’s ongoing programme for 2024–2027, alongside mezzo-soprano Anne Sofie von Otter and composer Vince Mendoza.

Martin Fröst's residency at the Academy of Music and Drama will begin on 7 November 2025 with a seminar for students. Spanning two academic years, the residency will include masterclasses, workshops and concerts. Highlights include an orchestral production with the Academy’s symphony orchestra from 8–12 March 2026, in which Fröst will appear as conductor, soloist and composer.

An internationally renowned artist

Martin Fröst is a celebrated clarinettist, conductor and Sony Classical recording artist who is renowned for pushing the boundaries of classical music. In 2014, he became the first clarinettist to receive the Léonie Sonning Music Prize. In 2022, he was named “Artist of the Year” at the International Classical Music Awards, in recognition of his global career, innovative projects, and philanthropic endeavours.

“Through Martin Fröst’s participation in the Artist in Residence programme, students will encounter a musician who combines skill with innovation. His artistic versatility and openness to exploring new forms of expression will inspire the next generation of musicians, and his involvement will strengthen the programme’s international profile,” says Madeleine Olsson Eriksson, Chair of the Stena Foundation.

About Martin Fröst

Martin Fröst is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading instrumental soloists. The first wind player to be appointed Artist in Residence with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra in Amsterdam for the 2022/23 season, he has performed with renowned orchestras such as the New York Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra and the Vienna Philharmonic.

He has built a wide-ranging repertoire of more than 20 recorded albums, with a particular focus on contemporary music and specially composed works for clarinet. In autumn 2025, Fröst will release his latest album, B.A.C.H. His artistry is also characterised by boundary-crossing multimedia projects combining music with choreography and lighting design.

He has several engagements coming up, including with the NDR Elbphilharmonie Orchestra in Hamburg, where he will be Artist in Residence in 2025–2026. He will also perform at the Pierre Boulez Saal in Berlin and the Tonhalle Zürich.
