Anders Rosengren to host an episode of Sommar i P1

Published

Anders Rosengren, a professor at the University of Gothenburg, is one of this year’s hosts of Sommar i P1, Swedish Radio’s long-running summer talk program. In his episode, he explores questions of health, meaning, and what it means to be human at a time when increasing emphasis is placed on optimizing and measuring our lives.

His program will air on July 17 at 1:00 p.m. and will also be available as a podcast that same morning. It explores existential health in a divided world and draws in part on encounters he has had with patients throughout his work as a physician.

A good life

“When you meet patients regularly, an interesting gap emerges between how we often think about health in research and what people actually struggle with in everyday life. We are very good at measuring, optimizing, preventing disease, and extending life. But questions about how to live a good life and make sense of life’s challenges can sometimes be pushed into the background,” says Anders Rosengren.

He believes that his experiences as both a researcher and a physician have led him to reflect on the kinds of questions researchers choose to ask.

“It is easy to get caught up in details and mechanisms. But it is important to keep asking what problem we are really trying to solve and which questions are truly relevant to patients.”

Lifestyle and health

Anders Rosengren is a professor of molecular medicine at the Sahlgrenska Academy, University of Gothenburg, and a practicing physician at Skåne University Hospital in Malmö. He is the creator of Livsstilsverktyget, a digital tool that helps people prevent lifestyle-related diseases and develop healthier habits. Researchers are currently compiling the results from the first phase of a major study of the tool involving approximately 60,000 participants.

“We are already working on the next step. Together with researchers at Chalmers, we are investigating how AI-based language models can be combined with Livsstilsverktyget to provide people with more personalized support for health and lifestyle change,” he says.

At the same time, he continues his molecular medicine research on the disease mechanisms underlying type 2 diabetes.

“One of the last campfires”

Rosengren describes Sommar i P1 as a unique format that combines personal storytelling with knowledge and reflection.

“I usually listen when the guest or topic interests me. It is a format that successfully combines personal stories with public education in a way that few other programs do. The challenge has been making the program accessible to a broad audience without making it superficial.”

The program has already been recorded, and he is now looking forward to listening to it with his family when it airs.

“When the program is broadcast, I’ll gather my family and listen with them. This is something that only happens once in a lifetime. Sommar i P1 is a bit like one of the last campfires we still have – something people continue to gather around and experience together.”
