Alzheimer’s research on the Queen’s agenda

Published

When the Queen visited research environments and laboratories to find out about the successful Alzheimer’s research under way in Gothenburg, the atmosphere was one of joy and genuine interest.

The hosts were two professors of neurochemistry, Kaj Blennow and Henrik Zetterberg. They and their colleagues updated HM Queen Silvia of Sweden on the latest research on Alzheimer’s disease, an area she is keenly interested and engaged in.

County Governor Sten Tolgfors also joined in the visit to the University of Gothenburg and Sahlgrenska University Hospital Mölndal. The guests were shown around various neurochemistry labs — for routine sampling, ultrasensitive measurement of biomarkers for Alzheimer's, mass spectrometry and more.

The tour was preceded by a symposium, to which Professors Blennow and Zetterberg had brought another five leading representatives of the internationally successful Alzheimer's research conducted in Sweden.

The speakers were Bengt Winblad, Miia Kivipelto, and Agneta Nordberg of Karolinska Institutet; Oskar Hansson of Lund University; Lars Lannfelt of Uppsala University; and the hosts, Blennow and Zetterberg, themselves.

After the visit, the Queen proceeded to AD/PD 2023, the major international conference on Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s in Gothenburg, to make the opening speech. The conference, with 4,000 attendees, lasts for five days.

There were many questions from the Queen during her visit. Here, biomedical analyst Malene By, unit manager Irina Nilsson, Professor Kaj Blennow, and Professor Henrik Zetterberg accompany her.
