Air is under-investigated as a transmission route for antibiotic resistance.

Today CARe scientists published a study in the journal Microbiome where they studied resistance genes in 854 deeply sequenced metagenomes from humans, animals and a range of external environments.

Out of all investigated microbial communities, air metagenomes surprisingly harbored by far the largest diversity of resistance genes, including genes providing resistance to last resort antibiotics.
