About the seminar

The main purpose of this paper is to present and analyze the variety of the contemporary social mobilization of fathers and those concerning fatherhood, which has gained prominence in recent decades in most European countries. The paper presents the results of a research project conducted over the last 13 years (2011-2024) in all EU/EFTA countries and the UK, resulting in a first-of-its-kind study investigating these phenomena in national, comparative and transnational dimensions. The database utilized in this paper consists of information collected during the process of mapping fatherhood activism in Europe, the results of a survey that was distributed among all identified groups and organizations, and in-depth individual interviews conducted with activists from Poland, Sweden, the UK, Spain, and Germany. Among the main results of the study, one can distinguish three various forms of fatherhood activism present in contemporary Europe. These three different forms share the common activism terrain of fatherhood, but they differ in terms of their members, goals, priorities, issues, activities and attitudes towards the role of the father, children’s rights, and gender equality.
