The Nordic Maritime Law Gathering is a unique melting pot of industry experts, researchers, and students, interested in ocean related law. Fifty participants from all levels of academia are coming from the Nordics and beyond to partake in a two day program. The gathering is organized by the Department of Law at the School of Business, Economics and Law of Gothenburg University and takes place on the 30th and 31st of March.

The first day of the program includes visits to:

  • Stena Group and a viewing of one of their ships,
  • Mannheimer Swartling for discussions on how they work with maritime law,
  • Swedish Club for discussions on legal issues of maritime insurance and how a global maritime insurance scheme is managed, and
  • Vinge for discussions on their work in maritime law and the role of academia in private law practice.

The visits will give researchers and students the opportunity to discuss legal, as well as, technical issues with industry experts on site. It will of course also provide ample opportunity to discuss possible ideas for collaboration. The day is ended with a joint dinner at Handelshögskolan.

The second day contains one program for master students and one for doctoral students. Master students will be given the opportunity to discuss ideas for their master thesis in smaller groups and with participating researchers as well as industry experts. Doctoral students will have a program of presentations and discussions focused on topics that they are currently working on. The sessions will be attended by researchers and industry experts who will give feedback on the presentations.

The second day concludes with a joint program. First the attendants will work on project proposals based on the discussions that have been had during the day. This is followed by a closing session on writing and academic thesis led by professors Ellen Eftestøl and Claes Martinson.

The organizers are thankful to all participating industry experts, for their contributions, and, for the funding from, Stiftelsen Dispachören Kaj Pineus Forskningsfond, which is making the gathering possible.
