Halftime seminar: “Tolerant trees for urban environments in northern Europe”
Science and Information Technology
Halftime seminar with PhD student Astrid Fridell, Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences
Halftime seminar with PhD student Astrid Fridell, Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences
Focus for Astrid's PhD- project the importance of large and old urban trees when stakeholders are planning new trees in cities and how it is linked to climate changes. Opponent at the seminar is Anne Bjorkman and examiner Henrik Aronsson, both at the Department of Biological and Environmental Sciences. Astrid's main supervisor is Lasse Tarvainen (BioEnv).
Short summary
Urban trees provide numerous ecosystem services, many dependent on large and old trees. It is therefore important that we plant trees that can tolerate the harsh urban environments as well as the changing climate of the future. This thesis investigates the flooding, drought, and heat wave tolerance in a large number of tree species with varying physiological and morphological traits to assess their suitability for planting in northern European cities. The results from this thesis can be used as a guide for stakeholders when planting new trees in cities, thereby increasing the chances for urban trees to grow large and old.
