Halvtidsseminarium: “Tolerant trees for urban environments in northern Europe”

Fokus för Astrids doktorandprojekt  är  betydelsen av träd i stadsmiljöer, och på seminariet kommer hon att tala om vikten av att beakta större och äldre träd när man planerar för nya träd i städer och hur det är kopplat till miljöförändringar. Opponent vid seminariet är Anne Bjorkman, Institutionen för biologi och miljövetenskap och examinator Henrik Aronsson (BioEnv). Astrids huvudhandledare är Lasse Tarvainen (BioEnv).

Kort sammanfattning (på engelska)

Urban trees provide numerous ecosystem services, many dependent on large and old trees. It is therefore important that we plant trees that can tolerate the harsh urban environments as well as the changing climate of the future.  This thesis investigates the flooding, drought, and heat wave tolerance in a large number of tree species with varying physiological and morphological traits to assess their suitability for planting in northern European cities. The results from this thesis can be used as a guide for stakeholders when planting new trees in cities, thereby increasing the chances for urban trees to grow large and old.
