About the project

The art- and research seminar takes place in the building of Flickläroverket (Secondary school for girls in Gothenburg) inaugurated in 1935, at Götaplatsen. The girls at the school were often the first in their family to go on to higher education. It was a time when more women took place in professional and social life. The female lecturers became role models of a new public role for women. A sculpture of Fredrika Bremer in the staircase and the silver brooch with an image of Pallas Athena on the school caps, brought in feminist values. Many of the former pupils came to greatly influence cultural life, research, politics and education, in Gothenburg and nationally.

The building, designed by the architect Ragnar Ossian Swensson, carries a rich artistic and cultural heritage that combines women's educational history, architecture, urban planning, art, and cultural history. The location at the cultural centre at Götaplatsen, still characterize the activities in the house. In 1992, the building was integrated into the Academy of Music and Drama, named Artisten (the Artist). The University of Gothenburg is now planning to expand the building to host the entire Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, which means that the old Flickläroverket will be demolished to make room for a new building, designed for future artistic education and research, to carry on the legacy.
