About Marcel Du Plessis

Marcel du Plessis is a researcher in ocean and climate sciences at the University of Gothenburg, where he leads studies on air–sea interactions and their role in shaping the Southern Ocean’s influence on the global climate system. He holds a PhD in Physical Oceanography and has a background in observational oceanography, focusing on upper-ocean dynamics and exchanges of heat, momentum, and gases between the ocean and atmosphere. His research combines autonomous observing systems—such as ocean gliders and uncrewed surface vehicles—with satellite and reanalysis data to investigate how storms, ocean fronts, and fine-scale processes govern air–sea fluxes.

Through international field campaigns and collaborations, Marcel du Plessis contributes to improving the representation of these processes in climate models and advancing understanding of ocean–atmosphere coupling in remote, high-latitude regions. He currently leads the ERC-funded project SOFIA: Southern Ocean Fine-Scale Air–Sea Interactions. Alongside his research, he is engaged in supervision and teaching within marine science programs, promoting open and data-driven research practices for the next generation of ocean scientists.
