About Johan Gardfors

I am a PhD student of literature at the University of Gothenburg, specializing in questions of aesthetics, media theory and the relations between literature and art. During fall 2014 I was a visiting scholar at the Department of Art History and Archaeology at Columbia University in New York. I gained an MA in Comparative Literature from the University of Gothenburg in 2009 and an MA in Philosophy from Södertörn University in 2009. I founded Bladstaden, a small publishing company, in 2007. I also studied photography and media from 2001 to 2004 and Italian studies in Firenze from 1999 to 2000.

In my PhD thesis I examine the literary works of the Swedish writer and artist Åke Hodell (1919-2000). Considering the break between a modernist tradition and the neo-avantgarde of the 1960s, I analyse how Hodell's illegible, visual and proto-conceptual poetry produces meaning. Of particular interest to my research are the intersections of ethics and aesthetics, as well as the thematic cluster of man, language and machine.

Research interests: aesthetics, avant-garde and neo-avantgarde, visual literature and artist's books, history of philosophy, photography and literature.
