I am a doctoral student in religious studies since autumn 2016. The project I'm currently working on takes its starting point in the cosmopolitan satsang scene in the North Indian pilgrimage town Rishikesh.
During a part of the year, teachers and participants from various places gather in Rishikesh to participate in satsang. Satsang can be translated as 'gathering in truth', and is, in practice, a gathering where a spiritual teacher interacts with an audience with the purpose of reaching a deeper insight into the true nature of the self.
My primary interest is to look deeper into how the place itself through such various means as myths, tourism campaigns, and social networks becomes significant for the perceived spiritual development of those individuals who come to Rishikesh to participate in satsang.
